10 Things You May Not Know About Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

1. The New England Seaside

The Yacht Club Resort, nestled on the shores of Crescent Lake behind Epcot, was designed to evoke the shingle-style New England seaside summer cottages of the 1880s. The architecture and decor are filled with all sorts of nautical touches. Sophisticated details can be found everywhere, from dark hardwood floors, rich millwork, and brass accents to leather couches, antique chandeliers and beautifully detailed ship models. The gray and white clapboard exterior evokes the classic style of Martha’s Vineyard, and, like its sister resort the Beach Club, the grounds are surrounded by walkways lined with Japanese elms, crepe myrtle and magnolias.

2. The Lighthouse

A distinctive lighthouse, perched majestically at the end of the launch boat dock, beckons Guests from all around Crescent Lake.

3. Fun at the Shore

The Yacht Club shares one of the most spectacular pools at Walt Disney World, Stormalong Bay, with its sister resort, the Beach Club. Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios are both within walking distance (or take a launch boat if you prefer), and the nearby Boardwalk is a great place to visit for some nostalgic beachside fun.

4. Look Closely at the Furniture…

Look for a distinctive chest of drawers in the lobby. You’ll find the names of many favorite Disney characters on the plaques on each drawer.

5. The Faux Elevator

There is a bank of four elevators in the lobby, or at least there appears to be. One of them is actually a faux elevator, can you tell which one? (HINT: you might want to call someone for a clue.)

6. The Breathless II

The Breathless II could once be found at the marina and was an authentic replica of a 1930 “Chris Craft Runabout,” one of only fifteen that were ever built. It was 27 feet long and constructed of solid wood, and could once be rented out for special occasions and fireworks cruises.

7. Nautical Flags

The nautical flags found in the old Fittings & Fairings store, now home to the Market at Ale & Compass (as well as those that once appeared on the guest room bedspreads) weren’t random. They actually spelled out “Disney’s Yacht Club Resort.”

8. Where Did That Sand Come From?

The sand on the beaches of Stormalong Bay was imported, not from New England as you might expect, but from New Mexico!

9. The Lobby Globe…

The globe in the lobby was designed for the Yacht Club by Disney Imagineers to resemble globes from the 19th century, but it also includes some fictitious names and places (look closely!). You’ll also find a Hidden Mickey somewhere in the southern seas.

10. …and Its Hidden Surprise

The globe is also home to another fun detail. If you examine the globe you’ll discover a Hidden Mickey somewhere in the southern seas!
