Walt Disney’s Vision for EPCOT: By the Numbers

As we all know, Walt Disney’s original vision of EPCOT was that it would be an actual city, his Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow. But what would this city have been like? This week we’ll dive into the details and take a look at EPCOT the city…By the Numbers. Ready? Here we go!

5,000

Size (in acres) of the original EPCOT city as envisioned by Walt Disney.

50

Size (in acres) of the downtown district.

0

Number of cars driving through the streets of downtown EPCOT. How would you get around? On foot of course! If walking wasn’t your thing (or if you had a long way to go), you could hop a ride on one of the many PeopleMover vehicles that would have crisscrossed the city. Now THAT’S a TTA!

0

Number of garbage trucks prowling the streets of the city. Yep, zero! All of the trash would have been collected through a series of underground tubes.

30

Height of the central hotel tower (in stories). The majestic building would have been surrounded by shops, theaters, and restaurants.

3

Number of zones radiating out from the city’s center. This would have consisted of three rings: a greenbelt park, a ring of high-density apartments, and lastly, low-density residential neighborhoods.

6,900

Size, in square feet, of the 1/8th scale Progress City model inspired by Walt Disney’s EPCOT plans. You can see a portion of this model today in the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover.

22,000

Number of trees and shrubs in the original model.

4,500

Number of buildings in the model city, all lit from within. How?

1,400

Light fixtures! That includes the streetlamps!

1

Number of benches that would have been in the small area in the heart of the city that Walt had picked out specifically…a bench where “Lilly and I are going to sit and watch.”
