The Cinderella Castle Mosaic: By the Numbers

5

Number of murals in the Cinderella Castle breezeway. As you enter from the Main Street side, the five murals depict:
1) Lady Tremaine reading the invitation to the ball, with Cinderella, Drizella, and Anastasia (Cinderella’s step-sisters) looking on.
2) The Fairy Godmother transforming Cinderella’s everyday rags into a glorious gown
3) Cinderella running up the stairs at the ball, leaving her glass slipper behind.
4) Cinderella being fitted with the glass slipper, watched by an envious Drizella and jealous Anastasia.
5) Prince Charming and Cinderella riding a white horse as they begin their life living happily ever after.

130

Approximate size of each mural, in square feet. Two of the murals (the second and fifth) have doorways in them, but the other three are full panels. Specifically, the panels are 10 feet wide and 15 feet high, topped with a gothic arch.

300,000

Number of individual mosaic tiles in the five murals. (That’s approximate, we certainly didn’t count them all!). The tiles are made of Italian glass and rough smalti (glass made specifically for mosaics traditionally used by Italian craftsmen).

500

Number of different colors in the mural. These include red-tinged tiles for the face of Anastasia and green-tinged tiles for the face of Drizella (and that’s how we know they were envious and jealous!).

14

Purity of the gold (i.e., 14 karat) that was used (along with sterling silver) to fuse the tiles.

2

Imagineers that were immortalized in the mural with cameo appearances, specifically Herb Ryman and John Hench. You can find them in the scene where Cinderella is being fitted with her glass slipper.

22

Number of months it took to complete the mural. The mural was designed by Dorothea Redmond, while the mosaic was created by Hanns-Joachim Scharff (you can see their names immortalized in the mural itself). The mural was installed by Scharff, his daughter-in-law Monika Scharff, and a team of six craftsmen.
