6 Things You May Not Know About Joy

1. One of the first challenges the production team faced when creating Inside Out was how to bring emotions to life. What would they look like? They began with simple colors and shapes, with Joy being a yellow star, Anger being a red brick, and Sadness being a blue tear. Joy’s effervescent appearance was inspired by pinwheels, Champagne, and sparklers.

2. Early versions of Joy bore a slight resemblance to Tinker Bell! To avoid similarities to the diminutive fairy, Joy’s hair color was changed to blue. In fact, before Anxiety was introduced in Inside Out 2, Joy was the only Emotion whose hair and eye color did not match her theme color.

3. Joy’s look was partly inspired by Audrey Hepburn. Hepburn’s ageless quality was perfect for the new character. Joy was also given movements inspired by gymnasts.

4. Though her look owes much to the classic movie star, much of Joy’s personality was inspired by Pollyanna from the 1960 Disney film of the same name. In fact, Pixar had briefly considered Hayley Mills (who played the title character) for the role of Joy!

5. Director Pete Docter suggested that Joy should be designed to be “sprite-like and golden.” To that end, the RenderMan team developed a new technique called geometrical optics. Ultimately, the production team spent eight months perfecting Joy’s aura.

6. In early versions of the film, Joy’s costume consisted of blue overalls. This was partly because the creative team sought to steer clear of stereotypical “girly” interests, such as the color pink and frilly dresses. In the end though, her attire became the characteristic lime-colored summer dress she wears in the film.
