The Magic and Memories of Epcot Forever
This spring, Epcot will welcome HarmonioUS, a new nighttime fireworks spectacular. The show will be a celebration of Disney music around the world, and honestly I can’t wait to see it. Like most, I adored Illuminations, and got a little emotional the last time I watched the Earth Globe leave the World Showcase Lagoon. That said, I love Walt Disney’s “Keep Moving Forward” ethic and I know that whatever comes next won’t disappoint.
Luckily, while we wait, there’s another fantastic show to enjoy while visiting Epcot: Epcot Forever. I adore this show. It debuted on October 19 and will only run for a few more months, but in that brief time it has crept its way into my heart and made itself comfortable.
If you haven’t seen the show, it’s a celebration of all things Epcot. There are laser lights, fireworks, and amazing kites that race across the lagoon and look like glowing, living creatures in the sky. Then of course there is the music. Oh, the music. It hits you right in the feels. That’s because it takes you on a tour of the musical history of the park.
The show begins with “One Little Spark” from Journey Into Imagination. Figment, for me, is sort of like Epcot’s spirit animal. He’s the embodiment of possibility. The voice of Walt Disney introduces the name of the park: Epcot. E.P.C.O.T. The Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. Hearing Walt’s voice in the park is a decidedly moving experience. It then moves onto “We’ve Just Begun to Dream” from the Epcot Center Grand Opening. Though it opened fourteen years after Walt Disney’s death, the park was the fulfillment of Walt’s last great and daring dream, and this song is appropriately epic.
After the opening, the show moves on to celebrate the spirit of innovation found throughout Future World. A young voice greets us with, “”Welcome to the future… or, should I say, your future?” from Spaceship Earth. We hear music from Horizons, Universe of Energy, and “Listen to the Land” from Living with the Land.
Next comes Exploration. A child’s voice declares, “Soarin’ to Tower, we are ready for takeoff.” We then hear “Tomorrow’s Child” from Spaceship Earth, followed by the music of Soarin’. Just the swell of the strings, and I can smell the grass of the African veldt, and feel myself flying high over the ocean as a whale leaps into the air. We also hear the music of Magic Journeys, one of Epcot’s opening day attractions.
Of course, no Disney experience would be complete without that one little spark of imagination, and that’s what the next segment of the show celebrates. A young voice says, “”And so, as you can plainly see, imagination works best when it’s set free!” and we are treated to the Sherman Brother’s ever singable, “One Little Spark”, before hearing “Makin’ Memories” from Magic Journeys. Next comes one of my favorite moments in the entire show: a very brief moment of, “Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit” from Kitchen Kabaret. I know there are a lot of people who would bring back Horizons if given the chance, but I might just have to bring back the singing and dancing produce. The segment ends with “It’s Fun to Be Free” from World of Motion.
The penultimate portion of the show is titled “Celebration.” It begins with the lines, “May peace go with you forever and ever as you celebrate the future hand in hand…” from Tapestry of Nations, which then leads into the brilliant music of Gavin Greenway for the Tapestry of Nations parade, which ran from 1999 until 2001.I don’t think it’s possible to hear this music and not get chills. The Celebration segment also includes the song, “Golden Dream” from The American Adventure, and “Celebrate the Future, Hand in Hand,” from the Walt Disney World Millenium Celebration.
With that, we reach the finale. “One Little Spark” plays again, followed by Aladdin’s, “A Whole New World,” a nice allusion to the coming of HarmonioUS.
It’s a brilliant show that leaves me feeling warm and fuzzy, and just a little misty eyed. I’ll be sad to see it go but, as Walt says at the end of the show, “E.P.C.O.T is and will always be in a state of becoming. It will never cease to be a living blueprint of the future…”
I totally agree. As a long time visitor to EPCOT, this show touched my emotions when I saw it online and especially in person. While I look forward to the “new” EPCOT, the music of Epcot Forever brings back such great “Makin’ Memories” memories.
Louis, thanks so much for the comment and for reading. It’s a really incredible show! I’ll be sad to see it go, but still excited to see what comes.
